At All Saints, we believe that learning French broadens horizons, develops cultural understanding and equips pupils with the communication skills needed in an increasingly connected world. We aim to inspire pupils to become curious, confident and enthusiastic language learners with a broad understanding of French language and culture. Our curriculum enables pupils to progressively develop their knowledge and skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing French. Through regular practice and retrieval of vocabulary and grammatical structures, children build confidence, fluency and increasing accuracy in communicating in French. The aim is to encourage pupils to become open-minded citizens, who can appreciate diversity, engage meaningfully in the wider world and be well-prepared for further language learning at secondary school.
Having grown up in Denmark, been brought up bilingual and studied Modern Foreign Languages at university, our French subject lead, Mrs Pond, is passionate about promoting language learning and fostering an appreciation of foreign culture and languages. Her aim is to provide pupils with the tools to become good language detectives and to develop an enthusiasm for foreign language learning as well as curiosity about the wider world.
To help foster our French cultural understanding, Years 3 and 4 learnt about the national day of France - Bastille Day (or le 14 juillet as it is known in France). They then spent an afternoon learning to play boules, learning a French song (including some interesting dance moves!) and doing a French food tasting. Some foods were definitely more popular than others!
